HYBRID SEMINAR IN 13-2-005 AND ZOOM
Abstract:
The Phase-2 upgrades of ATLAS and CMS will require new trackers with readout electronics operating in an extremely harsh radiation environment (1Grad), processing high hit rates (3GHz/cm2) and producing high data rates (5 Gb/s). The RD53 collaboration is a joint effort between the ATLAS and CMS experiments to develop the readout chips for the HL-LHC pixel detectors of both experiments.
Due to different mechanical constraints of the two trackers and specific requirements of each experiment, the chips have been designed in two flavours, having different dimensions and analog front-ends. In 2023 the engineering runs of the final ASICs have been submitted to the foundry, while currently the full production is on-going and close to completion.
This seminar will cover the history of the RD53 project, its motivations and challenges, as well as a general overview of the chip architecture and some test results.
